Valentine's Day 2008
Valentine's for Veterans

Crete Middle School TeamMates participated in the National Valentines for Veterans project for the fourth year in a row, selecting the US Army Training Center at Ft. Jackson, SC to be the recipients for this year's project.

With the help of middle and high school TeamMates, valentines were made available for 5th through 12th grade students, along with staff members in all three buildings. Two lower elementary classes also included their valentines. Over 1200 notes were written, and then mailed to various locations at Ft. Jackson. Task Force Marshall at McCrady Training Center, Moncrief Army Community Hospital, Fitness Training Company, and the 171st, 193rd and 165th Infantry Brigades were among the groups who received these hundreds of well-wishes.

"I have been in close contact with Ft. Jackson's public relations, and they are absolutely thrilled with the generosity of Crete students and staff in remembering their servicemen/women. They were so looking forward to the smiles and encouragement all over the post when they deliver the valentines."

"This provided a way for our school to express appreciation for their service and dedication, while also giving our mentees a chance to provide a valuable community service." Middle School Coordinator Zoe White said.

There are 22 TeamMates matches at the middle school, with 64 matches in the program, each meeting for one hour a week. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, or would like more information, contact Zoe White at 826-7784.

TEAMMATES CONTEST KICKS OFF A NEW YEAR OF MENTORING

Friendly rivalry can be a blast, especially when both teams come out winners. On Friday, October 5th, Crete TeamMates competed against Beatrice TeamMates in a kickoff at the conclusion of the Crete/Beatrice football game.

"Kickers Ryan Jacobson, Bryan Florendo, Gary Lothrop and Bill Lorenz kicked a combined total of 115 yards, with Bryan coming up the winner at 40 yards for the competition and an additional kick of 50 yards for the record," replied Zoe White, Crete Middle School TeamMates Coordinator. "Our kickers were such good sports in helping us with this. Over $1700 was raised for this event, due to the generous support in Crete for the TeamMates program. Mentees Amanda, Meghan, William, Jimmy & Caden were kept busy running the balls back to the kickers."

"All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards supporting mentoring in Crete Public Schools, which really makes this a win/win situation. Our mentors are supported, who in turn support their mentees, who will hopefully someday pay it forward."
