Founded in 1991 by Dr. Tom and Nancy Osborne with 22 football players serving as mentors, the TeamMates Mentoring Program is proud to celebrate its 30th Anniversary in 2021-22. In honor of this landmark occasion, TeamMates is launching a campaign to: increase mentors to ensure that every student who requests a mentor can be matched for success; and to raise funds to support the Mentoring Program and the Foundation to provide financial sustainability of TeamMates for decades to come.
Zach Wiegert (Offensive Tackle, 1991-94) and Doug Glaser (Offensive Tackle, 1987-89) will chair the Players’ Challenge Committee that will include a friendly competition between the offense and the defense. Other members of the Players’ Challenge committee include: Dan Anderson (Offensive Guard, 1971-73); Frosty Anderson (Split End, 1971-73); Shane Geiken (Linebacker, 1989-91); Dave Morock (Safety, 1968-70); Jim Pillen (Defensive Back, 1976-78); Tom Sorley (Quarterback, 1976-78); Kris Van Norman (Safety, 1980-82); and Tony Veland (Safety, 1992-95). Those who wish to donate to the Players’ Campaign can do so at Teammates.org and they can designate whether they wish to give in honor of a player or for the offense or defense.
Co-Founder Tom Osborne said, “Research shows that the number one indicator of success for a child is a good relationship with a caring adult. The TeamMates Mentoring Program has come a long way since 22 football players raised their hands to participate in a school-based mentoring program 30 years ago, but we still need to recruit mentors who are ready to make a difference in a student’s life and identify funding to sustain TeamMates program into the future.”
The TeamMates mission is to “positively impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential through mentoring.” A strengths-based mentoring program, TeamMates equips mentors to help students discover their individual strengths and talents. To ensure safety of mentor and mentees, matches only meet at school or via a monitored portal.
Over the last 30 years, TeamMates has served more than 43,000 youth across Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas, and Wyoming. Students and mentors report higher levels of hope and engagement in work or at school because of their match thus impacting their overall wellbeing and academic success.
Data annually reported by each school where match meetings are held, confirms that mentoring does make a positive impact. In fact, 95% of TeamMates senior mentees graduate; 91% of TeamMates mentees had higher levels of hope; 85% of TeamMates mentees improved their attendance.
As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, a TeamMates Players’ Campaign will commence in the fall and the annual TeamMates Gala Tailgate, featuring special guests Alex Rodriguez, Warren Buffett and Tom Osborne, will be held at the La Vista Embassy Suites on Friday, Nov. 5, 2021.
