Deb was matched with Avery in February 2023 when Avery was an eighth grader at Chase County Schools. Three years later, the pair continues to meet consistently.
Deb’s commitment to the match is especially notable. In the spring of 2025, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and regularly travels 350 miles to Omaha for treatments and appointments. She also owns and operates a hair salon and a lawn-mowing business. Despite these demands, Deb continues to show up each week for Avery.
“I feel my TeamMate has done more for me than I have for her,” Deb said. “I always leave our meeting time feeling upbeat and positive. She is a blessing to me.”
For Avery, the relationship has made a lasting impact. Chase County Program Coordinator Sheila Stromberger said Avery shared that it means a lot to her when Deb attends her sporting events including volleyball, basketball and track.
Those who see Deb and Avery together at school and in the community can easily recognize the special bond they share.
